When Love Your Melon was first created, our mission was to give a beanie to every child fighting pediatric cancer. Over the last few years, that mission has grown and evolved into giving 50% of net profit to nonprofits we support in the fight against pediatric cancer. With this came the creation of the Love Your Melon Fund, which is the nonprofit sector of Love Your Melon that handles all of our monetary giving to nonprofits who lead the pediatric cancer industry in research, providing family support, and creating therapeutic experiences.
One of the amazing nonprofits we support is Sing Me A Story, an organization giving children in need the opportunity to write and illustrate stories about anything they can imagine! These stories and illustrations are then distributed to professional songwriters, who create songs about the children’s creations.
At age 3, Joelle was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, a rare disease that causes inflammation in blood vessels throughout the body. Following this diagnosis, she was also diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia and was introduced to Love Your Melon through a campus crew visiting Joelle’s hospital room.
Since then, Love Your Melon has had the opportunity to send Joelle to Disney on Ice, throw her a birthday party, and introduce her to Sing Me A Story! This year, to celebrate Superhero Day, Joelle, now aged 9, came into the LYM Studio along with many other kids battling cancer to help inspire them to write their stories for Sing Me A Story.
Joelle wrote a story called “The Worry Monster,” which was transformed into a song written and recorded by Humbird. “It kind of felt like a dream come true! I might just play it over and over again,” said Joelle after listening to the song written just for her.
The Love Your Melon Fund partnered with Sing Me A Story this year to create 11 songs for children who are battling cancer. Through the funding provided by the Love Your Melon Fund, these song writers are able to bring the children’s stories to life through the power of music.
