DKMS

DKMS is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders by: creating awareness; recruiting bone marrow donors to provide a second chance at life; raising funds to match donor registration costs; supporting the improvement of therapies through research; and supporting patients from day one of their diagnosis.

Every 3 minutes, someone is diagnosed with a type of blood cancer, but only 30% of those patients are able to find a compatible bone marrow match. DKMS is on a mission to recruit as many bone marrow donors as possible to provide a second chance at life for those fighting blood cancer.

In 2018, Love Your Melon provided $35,000 to help support the fees associated with registering new donors. This funding specifically supported DKMS’s goal to register more young male donors, which is currently the group most likely to ensure a successful transplant. We also established a partnership between DKMS and Love Your Melon’s Campus Crew programs in 2019 to help host swab drives and register donors to DKMS across the United States.

Your support in 2019 enabled us to give $100,000 to DKMS to fund the tools and costs associated with hosting more swab drives and registering new donors to the national bone marrow registry.  Love Your Melon Campus Crews will be working with DKMS to host swab drives on college campuses across the country. In 2019, we registered over 12,884 people to the registry. This brings our total of swabs at Love Your Melon hosted events to over 22,000.

In June 2020, we gave an additional $50,000 to DKMS to support a new program and initiative focused on registering more diverse donors, particularly those from the Black American community. As Black Americans only make up 7% of the registry, this program will work to actively improve that number to help more of the Black American community and families of color battling blood cancers. At the end of 2020, we gifted an additional $50,000 to DKMS to help fund the tools and costs associated with pivoting to online registrations instead of in-person drives in light of COVID-19. Our gift will help add 2,000 new young donors between the ages of 18 and 30 to the national bone marrow registry.

We are honored to have supported DKMS for a third year to support 2021 programs in their goal to delete blood cancer and continue to save the lives of children battling cancer.
