A couple of weeks ago, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Crew members had the opportunity to bring three of our superheroes together to participate in a fun professional photoshoot. The day was filled with laughs and smiles. The superhero’s made new friendships with each other and the crew members.
Katie was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 16. Shortly after her diagnosis, she started chemotherapy. “The hardest part of my treatment was losing my hair, and not being able to recognize my own reflection in the mirror.” After enduring 4 months of chemotherapy Katie entered remission. “Being one year cancer free, I am grateful for every day because I get to live my life and follow my dreams.”
Emma was diagnosed with Mast Cell Disease at the age of 16. Treatment for Emma includes chemotherapeutic drugs and immunotherapy. Emma will soon be studying nursing at Gateway Technical College because of her desire to be a Patient Advocate. She uses her story to advocate for those with chronic illnesses or disabilities. Emma has a passion for spreading the Love Your Melon mission because she knows how important it is to fight for patients.
Natalee was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, one week before starting her junior year of high school. She had to start chemotherapy right away. 10 months after her diagnosis, she was in remission. “Although the cancer is gone, the emotional pain will always be there, as well as the many side effects, but I am stronger than ever and happier than ever.”
Celebrating these beautiful superheroes is an amazing feeling and we are lucky to have our incredible crew members help make events like this happen. Thank you all for your support in the fight against pediatric cancer.
